Free the Word: Debate on Cultural Boycott

This Sunday: a debate on cultural boycott, as part of London’s Free the Word Festival.

Please note: the tickets claim this event starts at 4pm, however I have checked with the festival, and it definitely starts at 5pm).

Should writers boycott festivals in countries with poor records on free speech and human rights? Or is it always better to engage with regimes, however unpleasant? At a time when literary festivals are appearing all over the world, authors increasingly face such complex ethical dilemmas. The Southbank Centre’s Head of Literature, Rachel Holmes, novelists Romesh Gunesekera and Gillian Slovo, and PEN International President John Ralston Saul debate the increasingly blurry boundary in writers’ lives between politics and aesthetics.

Free Word Centre, 60 Farringdon Road, London.
Tickets: £8 (£5 PEN Members and Concessions), or £25 for full festival ticket
